Identifying Your Zone of Genius

The “Zone of Genius” concept is a simple way to pinpoint what lights you up and where you perform at your absolute best.

It divides your work into four stages:

  1. Zone of Incompetence: These are tasks you struggle with or that drain your energy. They’re best delegated or avoided where possible.

2. Zone of Competence: With these tasks, you’re capable at them but not exceptional. In this zone you're not uniquely talented at what you're doing and you get them done without much enthusiasm.

3. Zone of Excellence: This is the work you’re really good at. Others might rely on you for it, but even though you excel here, it doesn’t light a fire in you.

4. Zone of Genius: This is where talent meets passion. Here, you feel most alive and deliver your highest value because you’re working in sync with your natural gifts.

The Zone of Genius concept is from a famous CEO coach called Matt Mochary who's worked with Naval Ravikant, Sam Altman and other leading founders.

Personally, I found it fascinating hat the Zone of Excellence is considered the biggest trap out of the four zones. The "ideal" here is that you orient what you work on to match what you're uniquely on this planet to do.

To stoke some reflections for yourself, consider:

  • How do you think differently to others?
  • What areas of work do you enjoy the most?
  • What have other people said you excel at?
  • What looks like work to others, but feels like play to you?
  • When under stress or pressure, what do you choose to work on out of comfort?

Here's my Zone of Genius which I shared with my team last year:

My favourite example of a Zone of Genius is when Gymshark founder Ben Francis stepped down as the CEO in 2017.

I'd never heard of anybody volunteering to step down from a leadership position, particularly in a fast-growing company, but Ben made the courageous decision to focus on what he was best at.

In 2021, now ready to lead the company, Ben was reinstated as CEO. This shows how powerful it is to know our strengths and weaknesses, and how large decisions like this can still be reversible.

What a power move.
