😧 How I Met Tony Robbins

Hey friend,

Before we get started, welcome to the 294 new subscribers of Creator’s Compass!

Every time I’ve put myself out there despite feeling uncomfortable, something beyond my imagination has happened.

Here’s the story of how I met Tony Robbins. I hope this serves as a reminder for you to face up to your fears.

Let’s get into it.

💭 Thought of the week

A strong personal brand will change your life.

In 2020, Ali Abdaal launched the first cohort of his YouTube course, The Part-Time YouTuber Academy.

It was peak lockdown with the pandemic and everything was virtual.

Thirty minutes into one of the live sessions, Ali was asked about his current content strategy.

“Oh that’s all Joe, he’s on the call now actually, Joe come on for a sec.”

My heart dropped.

I stumble to turn my video on and quickly check that I wasn’t muted.

There were 350+ people on the call eagle-eyed to hear some form of wisdom from me. It was totally unexpected... I had nothing planned.

I was 22 and had never done any form of public speaking before. I wanted the ground to soak me up. My cheeks went red, my voice cracked, and even though it was literally just 5-minutes, I couldn’t wait for it to end.

Now here’s where serendipity comes in.

One hour later from this fiasco I got a DM on Instagram.

Somebody on that call, with one hell of a heart, noticed how uncomfortable I’d felt and reached out to me to reassure me.

I’m keeping his name private as that’s his vibe (we’re great friends now), but he was in Tony's circle. He thought I'd benefit from Tony's events and invited me to be his guest the following year.

I’ve been to Florida three times now, with the first trip being my first ever long-haul flight and my first time in America.

This is just one story, of many, where I've immediately been rewarded for facing up to a fear.

Life has a funny way of challenging us. When we step up to these challenges we feel alive and connected to the path that’s meant for us.

Put yourself out there to be found and the right people will find you.

Oh, and if you haven’t read it yet, I met Ali Abdaal through complete luck too from a cold email. Read that newsletter here.

💡 A perspective to consider

Are you trying to be successful in real life or trying to look successful online?

I just want to be a better person in the real world with social media an afterthought. This might sound obvious, but I think more than ever this can get mixed up by younger generations.

Live an interesting life (on your terms) and then document it online. I want to spend more time in nature and to achieve more depth in my relationships.

As a result, business owners who’ve achieved a healthy balance in their lives inspire me the most.

❤️ Content I LOVED

📸 Instagram - How To Stop Being A People-Pleaser by Ben Meer

- I’ve learned recently that I always try to pour from an empty cup. People-pleasing is a lose-lose situation as you can’t actually help other people unless you’re feeling strong in yourself.

🎧️ Music - Nothing Was The Same (Deluxe) by Drake

- I’ve not featured an album before but I’m really feeling some old-school Drake on drives at the moment. Throwback central.

📹️ YouTube - Shari Harley’s Advice on Feedback

- I love the short clips on this YouTube channel helping us to navigate difficult situations at work. I need to grab her book How To Say Anything To Anyone as the advice is so actionable.

✍️ Quote of the week

Skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it has been.

Wayne Gretzky

An example of this quote would be to question where trends are going for your business instead of copying what’s already out there. It can also be taken to a deeper level in our personal lives too.
